Lord Buddha’s Parinirvana


Today: June 17 – Lord Buddha’s Parinirvana

Lord Buddha’s Parinirvana or Duechen Nga Zom is observed on the 15th day of the fourth month of Bhutanese calendar.

This sacred occasion known as Duechhen Ngazom and commemorated all over the Buddhist world is a celebration of Lord Buddha’s conception, birth, subjugation of evil, attainment of enlightenment and leaving of the human body.

Lord Buddha was born in 560 B.C. to Suddhodana, King of the Sakhyas, and Maya, in Lumbini. He passed away at the age of 80 in 480 B.C. in Kusinagara, India. In Bhutan, people across the country observe Lord Buddha’s Parinirvana or Duechen Nga Zom by visiting temples and monasteries. Some stay at home saying prayers.

It is considered as one of the most auspicious days for many.
